What happens after discovering active termites – and how we protected this Brisbane home.
When a Ferny Hills homeowner recently discovered live termites inside their house, they called us for immediate help. Finding active termites in your home can be overwhelming, but acting quickly and following a proven process makes all the difference. Here is how we assessed the extent of the infestation, eliminated the active termites, and installed long-term protection for the property.
Conquer Termites services the Ferny Hills and surrounding Brisbane North suburbs:
What we found during the termite inspection
The Ferny Hills homeowner first became concerned after discovering signs of termite activity around a door frame inside the home. Because visible termites can represent only a small part of a much larger hidden infestation, our technician Simon carried out a thorough termite inspection to determine how far the activity had spread.
During the inspection, Simon confirmed live termite activity within the door frame (Coptotermes) and also discovered evidence of termites extending into the roof void. Finding activity in more than one part of the house indicated that this was not simply an isolated area that could be treated without further investigation. Plus, this infestation was happening in the cooler months of winter – a time when termites are normally less active!
Simon used the inspection equipment we carry on our termite inspections, including a thermal imaging camera, Termatrac T3i motion detector and moisture meter, to investigate areas where termite activity could be hidden behind walls, timber and other building materials. The roof void was also carefully inspected to help determine the extent of the infestation.
Once the active areas had been identified, the termites were initially treated using Termidor Foam (Initial Treatment). This allowed us to target the live activity before progressing to a longer-term termite management solution.
Because termites had already gained access to the home, the owners wanted more than simply treating the termites we could see. A Termidor HE chemical termite treatment was subsequently installed around the property to provide ongoing protection against future concealed termite entry.
Why Ferny Hills homes can be at high risk of termite activity
Ferny Hills has many of the environmental and property characteristics that can increase the risk of subterranean termite activity. Skirting the expansive bushland of Bunyaville Conservation Park and the foothills of Samford, the suburb provides an ideal habitat for destructive subterranean species such as Coptotermes acinaciformis.
The area’s dense coverage of mature eucalyptus trees, high soil moisture retention near local creek corridors, and rolling topography create seamless foraging pathways directly into residential yards. Paired with established housing stock featuring high timber content, Ferny Hills homes face constant subterranean pressure year-round, making proactive barrier protection and regular inspections critical for long-term structural defence.
What to do if you find termites in your home:
Our Recommended Three-Step Process
- Full and thorough termite inspection
- Initial treatment of the live termites
- Termidor HE chemical termite treatment
Is it actually termites? What are the signs of termites?
For most Brisbane homeowners, termite activity is not easy to recognise. The signs can be subtle and may remain hidden inside walls, door frames and other timber structures.
In this Ferny Hills home, the termites were discovered inside a door frame and up in the roof void.
When you notice a possible sign of termites, avoid disturbing or spraying them and arrange a professional termite inspection as soon as possible.

1. Arrange a Thorough Professional Termite Inspection
The next step is to understand the full extent of the problem:
- How widespread is the termite activity?
- Are termites present in other areas of the home?
- How may they be entering the structure?
- Are there conditions around the property increasing the risk?
At Conquer Termites, our experienced inspectors use professional detection equipment, including thermal imaging cameras, moisture meters and the Termatrac T3i motion-detection device, to help identify hidden termite activity.
2. Initial Treatment of the Live Termites
Once we understand the extent of the termite activity, we can apply a targeted treatment using Termidor Foam to the affected areas.
This initial treatment is designed to control the live termites within the structure while causing minimal disturbance to the affected area.
It is an important first step, but it does not provide complete, long-term protection on its own. The next stage is to install a comprehensive chemical termite management system around the home.

3. Termidor HE Chemical Treatment – Up to 8 Years of Protection
After the live termites have been treated, the next step is to provide the home with long-term protection against future termite entry.
Conquer Termites has been protecting homes in Ferny Hills and across Brisbane for more than 20 years. For this property, we recommended a professionally installed Termidor HE chemical termite management system, which can provide up to eight years of protection.
Annual termite inspections are still recommended to check the condition of the treatment and identify any new risks around the property.
The outcome for this Ferny Hills homeowner
Finding termites in your home is concerning, but the problem can be managed effectively with the right steps.
For this Ferny Hills homeowner, our three-step process provided a clear path forward:
- A thorough termite inspection to determine the extent of the activity
- Targeted treatment of the live termites inside the home
- Installation of a Termidor HE chemical termite management system for long-term protection
Every termite situation is different, which is why we recommend starting with a comprehensive inspection rather than treating only the visible area.
